One of the biggest advantages of a bait boat is the ability to place a rig and bait accurately. But there is an important difference between dropping bait accurately at the surface and knowing exactly where that bait finally settles on the lakebed.

In shallow, relatively still water, that difference may be small. In deeper water, however, loose feed has much more time to move as it sinks. Cross-current, undertow, the density of the bait, the way the hopper opens and even the shape of the lakebed can all affect the final feeding area.

All else being equal, increasing the descent time gives moving water more opportunity to displace the bait. This is why a baiting method that produces an extremely tight patch in shallow water may create a noticeably wider feeding area in much deeper water.

That does not guarantee a perfect pile, but the release point and final feeding area may remain relatively close together.

How to Check the Depth Before Baiting


The first step is knowing how much water exists beneath your boat.

The deeper the reading, the more attention you should give to the possibility that loose feed will spread during the descent.

Should You Drop Up-Current of the Spot?


Potentially – but only when you have enough evidence to understand the direction and consistency of the underwater movement.

If the current is moving loose feed consistently in one direction, releasing slightly up-current may help the bait settle closer to the intended bottom area.

The problem is that underwater movement is not always identical to what you can see at the surface. It may also change with depth.

For that reason, avoid making a large arbitrary correction. Small, repeatable adjustments are more sensible than trying to guess a large offset.

Important: the correct offset is not a universal number. It depends on the actual water movement, depth and sinking characteristics of the bait being used.

Baiting on a Flat Lakebed


Once the bait reaches a relatively flat bottom, it is more likely to remain around the area where it initially settles.

A steep shelf or slope introduces another variable.

Your rig can also settle differently depending on its weight, lead arrangement and the density of the weed.
